Typed letter, 1 quarto page (260 x 160 mm), on embossed letterhead of the New Zealand Premier s Office, Wellington; dated 13 August 1900, addressed Dear Lady Seafield , signed in fountain pen three times by R. J. Seddon; annotated Premier of New Zealand at left margin, in the hand of Jane Emma Murphy (see below); remnants of hinges at each corner from where the letter was once mounted, otherwise extremely well preserved. James Ogilvie-Grant, Eleventh Earl of Seafield, married heiress Mary Elizabeth Nina (Townend) Ogilvie-Grant (1876-1962), daughter of Dr. Joseph Henry Townend, JP, in Christchurch in 1898. This letter to Lady Seafield from the Premier of New Zealand, Richard Seddon, was written in response to her request for his autograph. Seddon writes: Dear Lady Seafield, I have to apologise for not having, ere now, replied to your note of some little time back, but I was away from home when it arrived, and ever since my return I have been kept very busy indeed. Thank you for your kind enquiries, my health is much improved by the trip we had to the South Sea Islands. I append my signature in duplicate hereto, and hope this will meet what your wish. Hoping you and yours are well, I am, Yours sincerely, R. J. Seddon .
