Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi (b. 1743, d. 1819) was a critic of both modern philosophy and its offspring (the rationalism of German late Enlightenment), of Kant’s transcendental idealism, of Fichte’s systematic philosophy, and eventually of Schelling’s idealism. He was initially not regarded as a first–rate philosopher, but he had the natural talent of asking the right question: has philosophy forgotten the difference between conditions of conceptualization and conditions of existence?
