An important account of the Hajj of 1903 by Sultan Jahan, the ruler of Bhopal (now part of Madhya Pradesh) in central India. It is one of the first English-language books on the pilgrimage to have been written by a Muslim woman. The work “contains a brief geographical description of Arabia, to which is added a detailed account of the foundation of the holy Kaaba as well [as] the Prophet’s mosque. The second book deals with events and incidents relating to my pilgrimage to Hijaz” (pp.11-12). It is also illustrated with numerous photographic plates, showing the main shrines and sanctuaries of the pilgrimage.
