First New York edition (preceded by the first edition published by Roberts Bros. of Boston in 1883), this copy bearing a presentation inscription on the flyleaf from Dodge to fellow writer Eugene Field. The inscription reads: "To Eugene Field. Field's bookplate is featured on the front pastedown. Mary Mapes Dodge (1831–1905) was an American children's author and editor, best known for her novel Hans Brinker; or, The Silver Skates (1865), which the ANB describes as "one of the most successful children's books ever published." Alongside Harriet Beecher Stowe, Dodge was associate editor of the short-lived magazine Hearth and Home. She went on to edit the children's magazine St. Nicholas for over thirty years, "leaving an indelible imprint on American juvenile publishing" (ANB).
