REPORT OF THE TRIAL OF GEORGE RYAN...FOR HIGHWAY ROBBERY. A scarce account of lawlessness and a successful insanity defense in the early republic. George Ryan was tried in Superior Court, Charlestown, New Hampshire, in May 1811 for the assault and robbery of Luke Harris on the turnpike road in Marlborough. Several witnesses testified to Ryan's mental instability, and he was found not guilty by reason of insanity after thirty minutes of jury deliberation.
