Jordan, proprietor of the Pacific Museum of Anatomy and Science in San Francisco, issued together with a handbook and descriptive catalogue for his museum, and featuring an engraved image showing the museum's interior. The identity of Louis J. Jordan is somewhat shrouded in mystery. Jordan here claims to have received a medical degree in Edinburgh and to be a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of London. Historians, however, have not been able to corroborate these claims. Complicating the matter is the fact that, over the course of the late 19th century, the name "Jordan" came to be associated with several popular anatomical museums in such various places as London, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco, New Orleans, and even Melbourne, Australia. Whether and to what degree the museums were connected is not entirely clear. What's more, as historian Barbara Berglund explains, "there were almost as many Jordans as there were museums: Robert Jacob Jordan, Henry J. Jordan, Philip J. Jordan, R.J. Jordain, Luis J.
