[AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM UNITED STATES TREASURER MICHAEL HILLEGAS TO ANTHONY WAYNE, CONCERNING RECENTLY PROPOSED CANALS IN PENNSYLVANIA AND NEW ... An autograph letter, signed, from Michael Hillegas, treasurer of the United States, to Anthony Wayne concerning a recent resolution put forward by Wayne in the Pennsylvania General Assembly calling for improved navigation of the state's rivers and streams and for a canal connecting the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware River. The letter, addressed to "Genl. Wayne" at bottom, reads in full as follows: "New York Novr. 26th: 1785. Dear Sir, Being informed that you made a motion respecting The Roads & Inland Navigation in our State, and meeting with Christopher Colles of this place, I herewith take the Liberty of transmitting to you, one of his pamphlets, containing proposals for settling Lands in this State and promoting Inland Navigation to the Northward of the Mohawk River, by this they expect to command the Chief of the Trade of the five great Lakes by bringing the produce thereof to this City."This work is to be undertaken at the Expense of the Subscribers to the proposals, and next January they mean to apply to the Legislature to an act, the Bill I hear is already prepared. I send you the pamphlet not only that you may know what is going on, but that you may adopt any part of the plan for us.
