View of Lyons and the Rhône,

£1,500 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books

Lyons in the first part of the 19th century: a large line-engraving with fine contemporary hand-colour. The attribution is based on a very similar aquatint by Benedikt Piringer (1780-1826) after Wery (1770-1827) entitled 'De Lyon Et De L'avenue De Cette Ville Par Le Faubourg Saint Clair', signed and printed in Paris in 1820. Wery was born in Paris but died in Lyons in 1827. This is a lovely, large painted view of the city in bright colour. The view includes the parallel flows of the Rhone and Sa“ne rivers and the silk factories along the river. In the foreground are three charming couples, one walking their dog, who are enjoying the panoramic view of the city and its surrounding countryside. Line engraving with watercolour and gouache. (Image size:53 x 72 cm). Fine condition with some careful expert restoration.
