Hardcover, xi + 364 pp.; 22 cm; first edition, first printing; illustrated with a sanguine frontispiece drawing of the author by Jean Charlot and four black-and-white photographic plates (including a formal portrait of His Holiness, Pope Pius XII, with the Wu family).In Very Good condition with a Good dust jacket. Brown cloth-covered boards with a paper label affixed to the spine (cream stock printed in green ink, featuring a stylized tree illustration with "JOHN C.H. WU" above the title and "SHEED & WARD" at the bottom). Mild edge wear and shelf wear to the boards. Binding is tight. Original bookseller's label of the Oriental Book Store of Pasadena, California, on the bottom corner of the inside front cover. Endpapers mildly toned, otherwise pages are clean and unmarked, with light spotting and swirling to the edges of the text block. The illustrated dust jacket (front: a watercolor scene of trees, distant mountains, and a small Chinese pagoda signed "Wong"; back: a Chinese-style Madonna and Child with a red Chinese seal) shows a few small nicks and tears, light creasing to the edges, mild shelf wear with some color loss along the edges, and toning along the edges. Price clipped. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover.
