This substantial volume collects the May–August 1863 issues and is especially appealing for its four full-page engraved plates, all of which are present as called for in the index: * Portraits of the Prince and Princess of Wales * George Washington and His Family * Christopher Columbus * Charlemagne and Hildegarde The Washington family engraving is particularly attractive, and the Christopher Columbus portrait was engraved expressly for The Eclectic. The volume contains an extensive selection of 19th-century writings on literature, history, science, art, travel, biography and contemporary affairs. The book retains its handsome period binding with leather spine and corners, marbled paper-covered boards, raised spine bands, gilt decoration and red/green leather title labels reading Eclectic Magazine / May to Aug. / 1863. Condition: Antique condition with expected wear from more than 160 years of age. Leather shows rubbing, edge wear and deterioration, particularly along the joints and board edges. Marbled boards show wear and losses. Interior pages have scattered foxing, toning and occasional staining. The engraved plates remain striking and display very well.
