Weltmann (1800-1870) was an extremely popular prose writer in Russian in the 1830s and 1840s. His work is said to have influenced Pushkin, Gogol and Dostoevsky The 'Nouveau Palais Imperial' complex was commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I in 1838 and was finished in 1851. The project included the Grand Kremlin Palace, The Moscow Armoury and some grand apartments. These buildings formed a square which was named 'Palais Imperial '. The twelve plates in this album beautifully record this complex upon its completion. Folio (47 x 35 cm), [4], 38pp text, 12 chromolithographed plates (24 x 33 cms), captioned in French and Russian; contemporary blindtsamped green cloth, some wear to spine, a very good copy, Brunet 5.
