We are offering the RARE April 1886 (Vol. I, No. 2) issue of Shoppell's Modern Houses, an Illustrated Architectural Quarterly. Edited by Robert W. Shoppell, Stanley C. Covert and Albert H. Kipp. Published by the Co-Operative Building Plan Association of Architects, New York. (11 1/4" x 14 3/4) The catalog states that Shoppell's houses were to be built on 30 acres of land in the village of East Rockaway on the south side of Long Island but also makes it clear that houses could be built in other areas. 67 different houses are featured (one to a page) - each page has an etched illustration of the home, along with a complete description of the design and a floor plan. Building costs, which included all materials and labor, ranged from $500 to $9,000. The catalog states that these costs were based on construction in the neighborhood of New York City, and that other locations would be less, some much less. Prices, of course, varied depending upon which model was being built - from a small cottage up to a 3-story 5,400 sq. ft. ornate mansion with ceilings up to 12 ft. high, plus a veranda and other additional features. The last several pages are filled with advertisements aimed at homeowners - ranges & furnaces; curtains & draperies; tin & copper roofing; embossed and stained-glass windows; home safes and more. Also advertised [obviously for the wealthiest of homeowners] were electrical systems for call-bells [for summoning servants], burglar alarms, fire alarms, lighting, and even
