First American edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "for Paul and Ulla with every good wish Seamus Heaney May Day 1988", the same day he gave a lecture at Deerfield Academy, Massachusetts.The recipients were his close friends Paul and Ulla Sullivan. Paul Sullivan, a stockbroker in Massachusetts, was a patron and close friend of Heaney. When Heaney lectured at Harvard in the 1980s and 1990s, the Sullivans often hosted the poet for dinner. This copy was acquired directly from Sullivan's estate.
