Famous for his art deco apartment buildings and hotels. Book has dozens of photographs and covers the architect and his firm as influencers of an entire generation. Balsam Press is a small publisher and this book did not sell very well when originally published in 1986 making it difficult to find a nice copy. From the DJ flap: Emery Roth's great buildings include the Beresford, the San Remo, the Ritz Tower, the St. Moritz Hotel, and over 200 other romantic, classically-ornamented towers. Yet despite this considerable achievement and despite what Paul Goldberger says in the Foreword to this book that: ‘“‘Emery Roth was a superb architect, one whose career richly merits full length biographical treatment .. .”, he has been virtually neglected by history. This is, in fact, the first book to trace his remarkable career from penniless Hungarian immigrant to consummate designer of flamboyant buildings in New York between 1898 and 1948. Perhaps the reason that he has had to wait until now to have his moment in history is that, as Paul Goldberger suggests, when Emery Roth’s elegant buildings were first going up in the early part of this century, they hearkened back to a classical tradition that was being eclipsed by
