A letter from the author to Close is tipped in, thanking Close for his kindness and presenting him with this copy of his latest novel, "the best in my power to give as a memento of a friendship I shall keep green in memory".The novel is part of Phillpotts's "Dartmoor cycle", made up of 18 novels and 2 collections of short stories: "what Thomas Hardy did for Dorset, Phillpotts did for Dartmoor" (ODNB).Provenance: John C.
