1978 was quite a year for Muhammad Ali. In February, Leon Spinks shocked the boxing world by defeating Ali for the heavyweight title. Three months later, Ali appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone. And in September, Ali met Spinks again — this time winning the decision and becoming heavyweight champion for a historic third time. This collection follows that story as it happened. At the center is Rolling Stone No. 264, dated May 4, 1978, featuring Muhammad Ali on the cover, photographed by Annie Leibovitz. Inside is Hunter S. Thompson’s “Last Tango in Vegas: Fear and Loathing in the Near Room,” his account of Ali and the February fight with Leon Spinks. The magazine is accompanied by 11 original newspaper pieces from 1978, primarily covering Ali, Spinks and their two fights.
