He grew up in Baltimore and went to high school at Loyola High School in Towson, Maryland. He attended Loyola College (now Loyola University Maryland) and graduated in 1969 with a B.A. in English literature. He was the president of the chess club at Loyola College. After graduation he worked for several years as an insurance agent. In his spare time he wrote his debut novel, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. He sold the completed novel to the Naval Institute. An editor for the Naval Institute Press, Deborah Grosvenor, said that "I think we have a potential best seller here, and if we don't grab this thing, somebody else would." After a period of some years, the book sold over 300,000 hardcover copies and over 2 million paperback copies, making a national bestseller.
