Feb 16th, 1923."An accomplished woodblock artist, Lum (1869-1954) settled in Beijing in 1922 and lived there for the next 25 years, excepting a couple of years spent back in California in the middle of the 1920s. She lived in several houses near the Forbidden City, including the former residence of one of the sons of Emperor Daoguang.Juliet Bredon (1881-1937) grew up in China as the daughter of Sir Robert Edward Bredon, the deputy inspector-general of the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs Service. The family were caught up in the Boxer Uprising and the Siege of the Legations in Beijing during the summer of 1900. Her guide to China's historic capital was first published in 1920. This edition and the third (1931) were revised and enlarged.
