Savage Messiah: The Shocking Story of Cult Leader Rock Thériault and the Women Who Loved Him by Paul Kaihla and Ross Laver. Published in 1993 by Doubleday Canada Limited, this scarce Canadian true-crime hardcover examines Thériault’s cult communities in Quebec and Ontario and the coercion and violence endured by his followers. The book includes photographic material and was later used as source material for the 2002 screen adaptation Savage Messiah. This copy is signed on the title page by both authors. Above their signatures is the handwritten memorial inscription “In memory of Judy Godwin,” with “Burnt River, Oct. 28/93” written below. Judy Godwin is not credited in the book as an author or contributor, and her connection beyond being the person memorialized by this inscription has not been reliably established. Hardcover with dust jacket, in Very Good condition as graded by the seller. The jacket displays light surface rubbing and minor edge and corner wear. The photographed interior spread is clean and legible in the area shown, and the book contains black-and-white photographic illustrations. The inscription, signatures, and event notation are intentional and form an important part of this copy’s history. A desirable double-signed example of a difficult-to-find Canadian true-crime title.
