The Anatomical Exercises, Concerning the motion of the Heart and Blood. First edition in English of De motu cordis (1639), in which Harvey announced and experimentally proved the circulation of blood. "Harvey pointed the way to reform of all of physiology and medicine" (Norman). The English translation was based on Harvey's vernacular original manuscript; it is "the printed version of Harvey's own words" (White, p. 87). The edition also includes Harvey's essays responding to Jean Riolan's criticisms and James De Back's treatise in support of Harvey's discovery, first published in 1649 and 1648 respectively.This copy was recorded as sold at Bangs, New York, on 23 November 1896 (lot 409).
