PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. The first "peacock edition" of the Austen's enduringly popular novel, so-called because of the elaborate gilt decoration of a peacock on the front cover. From the collection of Charles Beecher Hogan (1906–1983), whose long association with the English Department at Yale included stints as a lecturer, a curator at the Rare Book Room, and scholarly work on English theater. His collecting interests were varied, and included Jane Austen, L. Frank Baum, Edwin Arlington Robinson, and Edgar Rice Burroughs.A sound example of the highly desirable illustrated edition of Pride and Prejudice.
