This is the story of Ivan Champion OBE, an Australian born in Port Moresby Papua in 1904, who was to become the last great explorer of Papua. It is also the story of the "outside men" of Papua, the officers of the Magisterial Service, who explored and pacified the enormous swamps, the vast grasslands and the rugged mountains of the Territory under Lieutenant Governor Sir Hubert Murray's policy of "peaceful penetration". The story is told largely in the words of Ivan Champion, from tapes, letters and interviews with the author over a period of many years, and from his official journals and patrol reports. Other sources are recorded interviews with his brothers, Claude and Allan Champion, photographs from many sources, including the Champion family and George Andersen; Bill Adamson's diary of the Bamu-Purari Patrol, patrol and annual reports and other official documents. The author has also drawn on his extensive knowledge of this general period of Papuan history and his collection of documents, including various papers and maps which have not been previously published.
