Henry Clifford V.C.; His Letters and Sketches from the Crimea (Hardcover) 1956 edition Henry Clifford, an officer in the Rifle Brigade, sent regularly from the Crimea many letters which were circulated among his numerous relatives. A century later readers will find that their spirit lives and glows. Clifford, third son of the seventh Lord Clifford of Chudleigh in Devon, was first commissioned in the Rifle Brigade in August, 1846. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his part in the Battle of Inkermann. For the greater part of the period covered by this journal, Clifford was A.D.C. to the commander of a brigade in the Light Division. He began as a subaltern and ended as a brevet-major. Aided by his share of luck and physical endurance, this rifleman saw everything. On the rare occasions when he was not directly engaged he was foremost among the specatators. The Alma, Balaclava, 'Little Inkermann', Inkermann, the assaults on the works of Sebastopol: he is always a first-class witness and a vivid reporter.
