Vintage hardback copy of The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA by James D. Watson. Published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson in 1968. This is the first UK edition, second impression, published in June 1968, just one month after the first impression in May 1968. An important early edition of one of the best-known books in the history of modern science, giving Watson’s personal account of the work that led to the discovery of the double-helix structure of DNA. This copy has the variant dark/black cloth binding with gilt lettering and a striking gilt DNA double-helix design running along the spine. In normal light the cloth has a dark brownish appearance, likely due to age and the tone of the original cloth. The top page edges are stained mauve/purple. The original Dorothy Judd-designed dust jacket is also present, including the original UK price of 35 shillings net. Includes photographic illustrations, diagrams and a reproduction of Watson’s 1953 letter discussing the proposed DNA model.
