An illustrated collection of personal histories documenting the men and women of the Virgin Islands National Guard, their military service, family lives, friendships, and contributions to the U.S. Virgin Islands. Schrader, identified on the cover as the 1994 Virgin Islands Humanist of the Year, preserves individual experiences alongside the history of a military organization rooted in the Caribbean. The introduction traces the Guard’s origins to U.S. Army Reserve units established on St. Croix and St. Thomas in the mid-1950s, initially attached to the 785th Searchlight Company in Puerto Rico.
