This is the Second Editon PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION THE Second Edition of the "Practice of Surgery" has been written at a time when marked advances in Civil Surgery cannot be expected, and I have therefore largely confined myself to a thorough revision of the text, and have endeavoured to make it clearer and more comprehensive. The paragraphs on "Military Surgery" have been brought up to date, but without burdening the book with details of treatment which are constantly changing. RUSSELL HOWARD. LONDON, October, 1918. PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION THIS Textbook on Surgery has been written at the request of many past and present students of the London Hospital, and it embodies as far as possible in a textbook the surgical teaching received by the writer at that Medical School. The main objects of the book are to give the student an introduction to surgery, and to prepare him for the final examinations in that part of the medical curriculum; but, as special emphasis has been laid on diagnosis and treatment, it is hoped that it will prove useful to him in his career after leaving hospital work.
