The author’s experience with the 6th Australian Light Horse Regiment during World War I (includes Gallipoli and the Sinai campaigns). Morale is a story of the Australian Light Horse campaigns in Gallipoli and Palestine during World War I, but it is a War Story with a difference. It deals less with actual fighting than with what may be called the lives of civilians in uniforms which more often than not could be called "things of shreds and patches." Its criticism is honestly fair even if at times it pulls no punches and it is unique amongst War Stories in that not one individual unit is mentioned by name, and individual characters by nick- name only. It is the story of most Australians who served in the campaigns mentioned; it is also that of all who, in any war in any land look on their service as something about which they are glad to remember everything and forget nothing. Thirty-five years ago, the first All-Aus- tralian Army came into existence. From a world struggle it emerged as a fighting force with a record which earned it the admiration of historians.
