As the principal of the Territory's airline, a Central Australian pastoralist and businessman, EJ Connellan was associated with many of the key people and developments in the Territory's later history. Above all, Failure of Triumph is an autobiography of a remarkable man who resembled the tragic figures of classical Greek theatre. He was a singular man who possessed rare qualities of intellect and character that made for greatness. These qualities enabled him to achieve many things and overcome immense problems that would have daunted lesser men. Yet, these same qualities compounded the difficulties against which he fought so desperately. At one time when frustrated by bureaucracy, EJ suggested that: People of the Territory may be classified in many ways. One classification is into doers and knockers. The doers have neither the time nor the inclination to knock the knockers. History will decide anyway, which have done more for the Territory. EJ Connellan certainly counted himself among the doers.
