Cousin Honoré. First edition, dedication copy, inscribed by the author to the novelist Irene Rathbone on the front free endpaper, "Dear Irene, your book, about the France you love. Not good enough for either of you - from Margaret Storm Jameson. 22:11:40". Set in interwar Alsace, the novel explores the growing Nazi influence in the region.Jameson (1891-1986) and Rathbone (1892-1980) met through English PEN, with Jameson serving as its president and Rathbone sitting on the executive committee. They maintained a close literary friendship, and Rathbone returned the favour of Cousin Honoré by dedicating her final novel, The Seeds of Time (1952), to Jameson. Her detailed engagement with Jameson's work is evidenced by her annotations in this copy, with comments including "this bit is so good" and "prophetic". Rathbone was known to partially erase her longer comments as her opinions changed in subsequent readings.
