Miscellaneous Essays: By Monsieur St. Évremond. First edition in English. Charles de Saint-Évremond (1613-1703) was a celebrated French essayist, moralist, wit, and soldier, admired in the literary world of Louis XIV. After he was exiled to England for criticising Mazarin's treaty with Spain (1659), he became a prominent figure in European intellectual circles, ingratiating himself with courtiers such as Buckingham and writers such as Hobbes, Waller, and Cowley. This volume contains a selection of his poems, portraits, epitaphs, and short essays - verses addressed to the King, moral reflections, political commentary, and meditative poetry. It is a rich pastiche of satire, philosophy, and French verse.
