History of England

£950 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books

A handsome, lifetime edition in twelve volumes of Froude's classic history of the Tudors, the most comprehensive work on the subject of the nineteenth century. Froude (1818-1894) was Regius Professor of Modern History at the University of Oxford from 1892 until his death, succeeding his great adversary E.A. Freeman, who had done much to discredit Froude's reputation as a serious historian. 12 vols; 8vo (22.5 x 15 cm); light spotting, occasional fold marks and the odd closed tear; contemporary half green morocco by E.J. Would of London, marbled boards ruled in gilt, gilt spine in 6 compartment, top-edges gilt, others rough trimmed, a little rubbed with minor loss, very good.
