A Few Marines by James W. Hammond, Jr., published in 2005. Signed and personally inscribed by the author to Colonel Richard Wood Smith, USMC: “For Dick Smith Fellow Marine, classmate and good friend for more than 50 years Semper Fi Wes Hammond” An especially interesting association copy from the personal library of Colonel Richard Wood Smith (1929–2023), a career United States Marine Corps officer, historian, educator, and writer. Smith did not simply read this copy. Throughout the book he made handwritten notes, grammatical and editorial corrections, underlining, and commentary in the margins. Examples include corrections to wording and punctuation, historical annotations, and personal observations on the text. Several examples are shown in the photographs. The inscription identifies Smith as Hammond’s fellow Marine, classmate, and friend of more than 50 years, giving the copy a particularly strong personal association.
