Ku-Lang-Su, or the Drum Wave Island. First edition. Located on the Chinese coast by Amoy, Drum Wave Island served as the picturesque retreat of Xiamen's expatriate diplomatic and merchant corps. Anathema Cottage, the island's foremost colonial structure, served as the residence of Elles & Company and then, from 1893, HSBC. Two copies are held institutionally (British Library and Yale), and we have traced one other copy in commerce (2017).Major George Uvedale Price (1853-1929) travelled in China with his camera from the 1870s to 1890s and produced several now-collectible photobooks. He spent much of his career in the employ of Tait and Co., the trading firm founded by James "Santiago" Tait shortly after Amoy was opened as a treaty port. Price was also a keen numismatist, and his collection of East Asian coins is held by the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
