Karl Jay Shapiro was an American poet, appointed the fifth Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1946. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1945 for his collection V-Letter and Other Poems. His poetry received early recognition, winning a number of major poetry awards in the 1940s, including the Pulitzer Prize, a Guggenheim fellowship, an Academy of Arts and Letters Grant, the Bollingen Prize in Poetry and the Contemporary Poetry Prize. He served as poet laureate from 1946 to 1947.
