Livingston wrote over 100 novels & many short stories by the end of her life. Most are about young Christian women or women who turn to Christianity. She started writing as a child in the 1870s. This is her first book as a young adult & was written in 1887 to earn enough money for her family to travel from their Florida home to the Chautauqua NY summer gathering.. It is an illustrated allegory of Chautauqua. And yes it sold enough copies for them to go. Despite the sales, today first editions of this are very hard to find.
