A new selection of rare comics fanzines from my large collection built up over the years.... 4x CHUMMY COMIC no.1 + CHEERY COMIC no.1 with their "BLACK PAPER VARIANTS" lot P.M. Productions (London, UK), 1944 A probably unique set of super-rare original vintage British comics from the War-time hiatus when normal white paper shortages resulted in a flux of independent publishers printing comics before the big publishers reasserted control. The "Chummy" & "Cheery" one-shots are already extremely tough books to find, but I also came across their "black paper variants" (my modern term) in an entirely different collection. P.M. were known to often use very low quality or odd cuts of paper during the war and after, but this is the only time I've ever seen them use black paper! I'm sure it would have been an attractive novelty to kids back then. The cut reminds me a tracing paper - glossy, obviously very dark, slightly translucent, prone to creasing - but if you look closely at the pictures the strips can be made out fine and certainly add a unique charm. "Cheery" is stapled, "Chummy" is not. All four are 16 pages each. All art by Reg Carter Collectors of these types of comics would be well advised to buy a copy of "Comic Papers by Small Publishers 1945-1950" book, written and published earlier this year by Alan Clark. Copies should be available direct from the publisher on eBay. Condition - overall in nice clean condition with lovely colours, but grades vary significantly, GD to FN
