Like many of Poe's poems, it explores the theme of the death of a beautiful woman. Sold before Poe's death but published posthumously New York Daily Tribune October 9, 1849 Sartain’s Magazine is the first magazine appearance of the poem. Appeared earlier in the New York Daily Tribune. Also contains a reprint of Poe’s “The Poetic Principle” This bound volume contains the 12 Sartain’s Magazine issues for the 1850 year, from January to December 1850 Contains all the high-quality mezzotint engravings, along with etchings, stipple, and standard line engravings, often complemented by occasional colored lithographs. Founder John Sartain was a master printmaker who popularized the mezzotint technique in America, allowing for rich, velvety blacks and soft tonal gradations without relying on traditional cross-hatching. Each monthly issue typically featured at least three brilliant, detailed printed plates.
