Colombia Gold Pre-Hispanic Metallurgy Jewelry Decorative Art National Collection Colombian Gold: Grand Cultural Exhibition — Treasures of the Legend of “El Dorado” (Oro Colombiano: Gran Exhibición Cultural — Tesoros de la Leyenda de “El Dorado”) published by the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum and the Museo del Oro, Banco de la República de Colombia. A substantial bilingual Spanish-Japanese exhibition catalogue published for the major Colombian cultural exhibition held at the Museo de Arte Fuji de Tokio (Tokyo Fuji Art Museum) from April 28 through June 24, 1990. The exhibition brought an unusually broad selection of Colombian art to Japan, centered on the celebrated pre-Columbian gold collections of the Museo del Oro of the Banco de la República. The catalogue provides an extensive survey of Colombian art and cultural history rather than simply a collection of gold objects. Its nearly 400 pages are organized into Arte de la Edad Antigua (Ancient Art), Arte Colonial (Colonial Art), and Arte Moderno (Modern Art), followed by documentation and a complete exhibition list. The exhibition incorporated pre-Columbian goldwork and ceramics as well as colonial and modern paintings, watercolors, drawings, sculpture and other objects from important Colombian museum collections. Of particular importance is the extensive treatment of pre-Hispanic Colombian metallurgy and the cultural background of the El Dorado legend.
