William Sachse, a European immigrant from Herford, Prussia (modern-day North Rhine-Westphalia), founded the city in 1845. He purchased 640 acres from Collin County and set in motion the events that would shape modern-day Sachse. Sachse erected the first cotton mills and gins in the county. After he generously provided 100 feet of frontage through all of his holdings to the railroad in 1886, the railroad built a depot on the frontage and named the town Sachse. Interestingly, due to a labeling error, many old legal documents referred to the city as ‘Saxie,’ but this was later corrected.
