Like Monet at Giverny, Gustave Caillebotte—born into Parisian wealth in 1848, trained as both engineer and lawyer before the Franco-Prussian War redirected him toward art—transformed a personal landscape into a laboratory for vision. In 1860, when Caillebotte was twelve, his family acquired a summer estate at Yerres, twelve miles outside Paris, where the young painter would spend nearly two decades documenting an Eden laid out according to the rigorous precepts of nineteenth-century French garden design. Pierre Wittmer, a recognized Caillebotte scholar, conducts an extensive hypothetical walking tour through the Yerres property, stopping at aviaries, exhedras, kitchen gardens, and ornamental flower beds to examine both the horticultural features and the paintings they inspired.
