Edwin Dickinson (1891–1978) remains one of American painting's most elusive figures—admired by the Abstract Expressionists though he did not share their aims, hailed as a "painter's painter" while resisting easy categorization. Raised in Buffalo and trained under William Merritt Chase and Charles Hawthorne, he spent most of his creative life on Cape Cod, working in deliberate isolation from the mainline modernist traditions roaring through mid-century New York. His monumental symbolist compositions—works like “The Fossil Hunters” and the haunting, unfinished “Ruin at Daphne”—sometimes consumed years of obsessive reworking, while his “premier coup” landscapes were executed in single sessions of spontaneous intensity. This catalog accompanied the first major retrospective in two decades, organized by Douglas Dreishpoon and traveling from Buffalo to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design, and beyond.
