Romola. A beautifully bound copy of Eliot's historical Florentine romance. Richard Bonfiglio considers Romola "the most meticulously researched historical novel of the nineteenth century" (p. 401). This book was bound by a Florentine-based binder and is characteristic of vellum bindings sought after by late-Victorian English Grand Tour travellers. Romola was first published in book form in 1863.
