Women in Love. First edition, signed limited issue, number 46 of 50 copies signed by the author and published in Britain by Martin Secker, who bought 50 sets of sheets from the privately printed first edition. The remaining 1,200 unsigned copies were issued in America.Undaunted by the prosecution of The Rainbow (1915), Lawrence spent more than three years seeking a publisher for this, its sequel. He finally had the book privately printed abroad by a small avant-garde publisher, a strategy he later used to great effect for Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928). Though his name does not appear anywhere in the book, Secker bound the sheets in the his style with a new limitation page. He published the first trade edition the following year. The novel was adapted for film by Ken Russell in 1969, starring Glenda Jackson, Alan Bates, and Oliver Reed.
