Wainwright Supreme Court, whose 1963 decision established the right to legal counsel at the state level and expanded the role of the public defender. Prior to the case. legal counsel was only constitutionally granted at the federal level, only promised in state court under certain stipulations. Clarence Earl Gideon was convicted of robbing 500 dollars from a jukebox on the evidentiary basis of a witness statement and sentenced to ten years in Florida state prison. Appealing the case, he claimed his constitutional right to legal counsel was violated when he couldn't afford a lawyer for his larceny trial.
