Arthur Marwood (1868-1916) was a close friend of Ford's and inspired the character of Christopher Tietjens in the Parade's End tetralogy.An English Girl describes is centred on the ill-fated romance between the titular English heroine and the heir to an American oil fortune. The literary biographer Frank McShane considered that the work "has a breadth of conception and seriousness of purpose that none of his earlier books possessed...
