The first edition of Lodge's third work of fiction and one of his more popular novels, scarce in such clean condition. Lodge was influenced by Mrs Dalloway and Ulysses, upon which he placed a comic slant on in this novel. Lodge was an English academic and novelist becoming a literature professor at the University of Birmingham as well as teaching at other universities across the world. He retired in 1987 to focus on writing full-time, where he penned almost twenty novels and many works of criticism, including The Art of Fiction .
