The first and sole edition of this illustrated publication presenting for the first time photographs taken by Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, on her historic state visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1938. Traveling with with her husband the Earl of Athlone, and her son, Lord Frederick Cambridge, the Countess of Athlone was the first member of the British royal family to visit the country. The tour took in Riyadh, Hofuf, and Dammam, Princess Alice meeting Noura bint Abdul Rahman, sister of the king, and other members of the Saudi royal family, captured here at gatherings hosted by Abdulaziz and King Faisal, both of whom feature in a number of shots, along with Prince Saud and Abdullah, Hafiz Wahba, and local people including falconers. Other locations shown are Jeddah, Wadi Fatima, Mahd al-Dhahab, Mudhitha camp, Taif, Ashairah Well, the Mosque of Ibn Abbas, the journey to Riyadh via Afif and Al Qiayyah, Wadi Hanifa, Jubailah, Al Hasa, Dhahran, and the port of Khobar, whence the British royals embarked for Bahrain.The images show Saudi Arabia on the cusp of major transformation: oil was struck in significant commercial quantities for the first time at Well Number 7 at Dammam in the same year.
