This edition was self-published by the author Thomas Davies, himself a well-respected actor of the 18th century, and retraces Garrick's life from to his upbringing and family to his early acquaintance with Dr. Samuel Johnson. Third edition, two volumes; 8vo (20 x 13 cm); bookplate to front pastedown, black and white frontispiece portrait to Vol. I, light spotting and damp-staining to prelims, marginal staining and wrinkling to final pages of both volumes though not affecting legibility of text; full tree calf with some wear to extremities, spine decorated in gilt with contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, joints repaired, frayed black numbering piece to spine of Vol. 1, corners slightly rubbed, board fore-edges decorated in gilt; 352, 434 pp.
