Hagenbeck founded Germany's most successful privately owned zoo, the Tierpark Hagenbeck. He was a pioneer in zoo architecture and design. He was also a merchant of wild animals who supplied many European zoos, as well as circus magnate P. T. Barnum. He created the modern zoo with animal enclosures without bars that were closer to their natural habitat. The transformation of the zoo architecture initiated by him is known as the Hagenbeck revolution. In 1887 Hagenbeck took up the cause of humane treatment of animals with the aim of demonstrating that the beatings and hot irons then used in animal training were both cruel and unnecessary.
