In 1930, a twenty-five-year-old Ward Ritchie left South Pasadena for Paris, having decided to apprentice with François-Louis Schmied, whom he believed "was the most imaginative and creative printer in the world". Schmied was a renaissance man who combined the skills of illustrator, typographer and printer, possessing an amazing capacity for observation and invention that brought new grace and beauty to the illustrated book. Born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1873, Schmied received formal training at the Guillaume Le Bé School before studying with Swiss painter Barthélemy Menn. His first major commission came in 1911 when Les Sociétés du Livre Contemporain—elite French book clubs comprising only the haut monde who sponsored lavish limited editions—hired him to collaborate as typographer and engraver with artist Paul Jouve on Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book.
